Tragic minibus crash kills 11 pupils in South Africa
Eleven schoolchildren have been killed on Monday morning when a minibus collided with a truck in Vanderbijlpark, a city south of Johannesburg, South African media reported.
The accident happened in the industrial city of Vanderbijlpark, and five other pupils were left with “critical injuries.” They were being taken to a hospital for urgent medical treatment, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) said.
South Africa has a poor road safety record, a problem the government has been trying to tackle.
In 2025, the country recorded 11,418 road deaths, according to data released last week. This was about 6% lower than the number recorded in 2024, but the figures still show a high number of road fatalities.
The Transport Ministry says reckless driving including speeding and drink-driving are among the major causes of road deaths.
Earlier, Transport Minister, Barbara Creecy, said it was time to change the law to scrap the current legal alcohol limit when driving in favour of a zero-tolerance approach.
