Two Injured as fire razes home of APC women leader in Yobe
A fire outbreak on Tuesday night destroyed part of the residence of the APC Zonal Woman Leader, Hajiya Fatima Mairiga, in the Don Etiebet area of Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, leaving two persons injured and causing heavy property loss.
The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Mohammed Goje, told Very Nigerian on Wednesday that the agency received a distress call at about 8:00 pm and quickly deployed its rescue team to the scene.
He explained that emergency responders worked to put out the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.
Although two people sustained injuries in the incident, they were promptly attended to. The extent of the damage to the building and property was described as significant.
“Our team responded swiftly to the call and worked hard to contain the fire. We extinguished it before it spread to neighbouring houses, minimising further damage.
Two people sustained minor injuries, but they were quickly evacuated to a medical facility and treated, and I am glad to report that both have been discharged in stable condition,” Dr Goje said.
He noted that the fire could have caused more damage if not for the prompt intervention of the SEMA team.
“Our officers acted quickly and professionally, ensuring that the blaze did not escalate. We commend the quick response of our personnel, who worked tirelessly under challenging conditions to safeguard lives and property,” he added.
Speaking on the agency’s role in emergencies, Dr. Goje said, “SEMA is committed to rapid response and the protection of lives and property. Our officers are on alert 24/7 to respond to emergencies anywhere in the state, and we continue to monitor situations closely to prevent loss and harm.”
Goje added that residents must always observe fire safety precautions and report emergencies promptly.
“We urge everyone to be vigilant, adhere strictly to fire safety measures, and ensure that any incident is immediately reported to the relevant authorities. Quick reporting can save lives and property,” he said, noting that assessment of the affected property is ongoing and that further updates would be provided as necessary.
