‘Who has Nigerian language helped?’ – Mr. P fires back at critics after choosing French as children’s preferred language
Singer Peter Okoye, widely known as Mr P of the former P-Square duo, has responded to criticism over his decision to raise his children to speak French instead of a Nigerian indigenous language.
The controversy started after the music star shared a post on X while in Paris, celebrating his children’s fluency in French.
His remarks sparked mixed reactions online, with some social media users questioning why his children could not speak any native Nigerian language.
“Still in Paris! Watching my kids speak French so effortlessly makes me think… maybe it’s time to own a crib here in Paris. Just a thought,” he wrote.
His post prompted an X user, @sambuddybest, to ask whether the children could also communicate in Igbo.
“Hope they can speak Igbo, too?” the user wrote.
Responding, Mr P questioned the practical value of speaking indigenous Nigerian languages.
“And who naija language help? Make I hear word abeg,” he replied.
The response sparked mixed reactions online, with some users arguing that teaching children native languages helps preserve culture and identity, while others maintained that parents should decide how to raise their children.
As the criticism mounted, the singer insisted that language choices within families are personal.
“When it’s your turn, teach your own kids all the languages in Nigeria if that’s your choice,” he wrote.
Mr P later posted a series of messages urging critics to stop interfering in his family’s affairs.
“I’ve got just three words for you: MYB — Mind Your Business.
“Go and find someone else to pour your frustration on. Not here.
“As for me and my family, we’re good.”
He also questioned why the public was concerned about the languages spoken by his children.
“Again, what exactly do you stand to gain if my children speak Nigerian languages? How does that improve your life?
“MYB — Mind Your Business. Cry harder.”
The singer further argued that English remains Nigeria’s official language and questioned the tangible benefits of speaking indigenous languages.
“Again and again… who has speaking a Nigerian language helped?
“The official language of Nigeria is English, yet this is what you’re worried about?”
Mr P also accused some of his critics of hypocrisy, suggesting that many would gladly relocate abroad and raise their children overseas if given the opportunity.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to focus on more pressing national issues instead of scrutinising the language choices made by other families.
