YouTuber IShowSpeed celebrates 21st birthday, 50 Million subscribers during Lagos stop on Africa tour
US YouTuber IShowSpeed visited Lagos as part of his African tour and celebrated his 21st birthday.
US-based YouTube and Twitch star Darren Jason Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed, marked his 21st birthday in Lagos on Wednesday while celebrating a milestone of 50 million subscribers on his YouTube channel.
The visit forms part of his ongoing African tour, which began on December 29 and has taken him through over 15 countries across the continent.
Rolling Stone magazine recently named IShowSpeed the Most Influential Creator of 2025, while Forbes estimates his net worth at $20 million.
The Lagos leg of his tour kicked off at the bustling Balogun Market on Lagos Island, where the influencer drew large crowds and experienced firsthand the lively energy of the marketplace.
“What are they saying? It’s like they’re speaking English, but a different kind of English,” IShowSpeed quipped as he left the market amid throngs of admirers.
He later visited Freedom Park, a historic site built on a former prison, where he sampled jollof rice for the first time and expressed his delight at the spicy flavours.
The tour continued at the Nike Art Gallery, a cultural hotspot for visiting celebrities and dignitaries.
Stephen Oluwafisayomi, a Lagos-based YouTuber known as Stevosky, told AFP that IShowSpeed’s visit highlights African culture to a global audience.
“He is showcasing the culture, relationships, and food. He wants Americans to see Africa as a place they can also come to,” he said.
In the evening, the YouTube star paused his security convoy to watch his subscriber count hit 50 million and celebrated by plunging his face into a birthday cake.
Local students and fans have noted that IShowSpeed’s tour, while highlighting both the charms and challenges of African countries, could inspire investment and development.
“He may have shown some negative aspects, but that should motivate people to help, contribute, or create businesses,” said Karim Jari, an 18-year-old high school student at the Nike Art Gallery.
Prior to arriving in Lagos, IShowSpeed celebrated Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations victory in Dakar.
His African tour has included a race against a cheetah in South Africa, a football match with 100 children in Angola, a cultural visit to Kenya’s Maasai community, and attendance at the AFCON final in Morocco.
Born in Cincinnati, United States, IShowSpeed started his online career a decade ago, initially posting video game content before expanding to global travel and lifestyle videos.
His African tour has attracted large crowds and widespread attention across the continent.
