Moffi, Onuachu on target as Nigeria settle for 2-2 draw against Poland

Nigeria were denied a morale-boosting victory on Wednesday after Poland struck deep into stoppage time to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw in an international friendly at the Stadion PGE Narodowy in Warsaw.

The Super Eagles looked set to claim victory after substitute Paul Onuachu converted a second-half penalty, but Przemysław Wiśniewski scored with virtually the final kick of the game to rescue a draw for the hosts.

Both teams entered the encounter seeking positive results after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria made a bright start and gradually gained control of proceedings after an evenly balanced opening spell. Their dominance paid off in the 23rd minute when Terem Moffi calmly finished to put the visitors ahead.

Poland struggled to create meaningful chances for much of the first half but found a way back just before the interval. Kacper Potulski struck from close range in stoppage time to level the score at 1-1 heading into the break.

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle made several changes at halftime as he rotated his squad and assessed options ahead of future international fixtures.

The substitutions added fresh impetus to the Super Eagles, who dominated large periods of the second half. Players including Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Raphael Onyedika, Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi helped increase the pressure on the Polish defence.

Nigeria regained the lead in the 77th minute after VAR detected a handball inside the penalty area. Onuachu stepped up and confidently converted the resulting spot-kick to make it 2-1.

The Super Eagles appeared on course to record only their second victory over Poland, following their 1-0 triumph in Wroclaw in 2018 courtesy of a penalty from Victor Moses.

However, Poland launched a late assault and found an equaliser in the fifth minute of added time when Wiśniewski produced a decisive finish to deny Nigeria victory.

Despite the disappointment of conceding so late, the draw offered encouraging signs for the Super Eagles, who displayed attacking quality, squad depth and resilience against one of Europe’s established football nations.
