BREAKING: FG Lawyer ask court to hand Nnamdi Kanu death sentence
Following the conviction of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, the Federal Government on Thursday requested that he be sentenced to death.
Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, who led the prosecution, made the application immediately after the court found Kanu guilty on all seven terrorism charges filed against him.
The government argued that Kanu’s alleged incitement led to the killing of several security operatives and the destruction of public infrastructure, claiming that both IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), destabilised the country.
Awomolo said the maximum sentence was necessary to ensure justice for victims of what he described as Kanu’s terrorist activities.
He explained that counts 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 of the charges carry the death penalty, while count 3 attracts 20 years imprisonment and count 7 carries a five-year sentence.
He urged the court to consider “the nature and gravity” of the offences, insisting that Kanu showed no remorse and behaved arrogantly during court proceedings.
The Federal Government also asked the court to order the forfeiture of all seized broadcast equipment and to restrict Kanu from accessing digital devices or the internet wherever he is kept.
For security reasons, it further requested that he not be remanded at Kuje Prison, citing past jailbreaks.
Before the court stood down proceedings until 4:10 p.m. for sentencing, Hon. Obinna Aguocha, representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North & South in the House of Representatives, pleaded for the court to temper justice with mercy.
The judgment brings an end to a legal battle that has lasted more than 10 years.
