Tinubu forms high-level team to deepen security ties with United States
President Bola Tinubu has approved the Nigerian contingent of the US–Nigeria Joint Working Group, a strategic move aimed at deepening security cooperation between both countries in tackling Nigeria’s growing security challenges.
The development follows a recent high-level visit to Washington DC led by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, during which both nations agreed to strengthen collaboration across critical security areas.
Ribadu will head the multi-agency delegation made up of senior officials drawn from key defence, intelligence, foreign affairs and internal security institutions.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, members of the working group include: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar; Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Bernard M. Doro; Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed; and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The statement added that Ms Idayat Hassan of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and Mr Paul Alabi of the Nigerian Embassy in the United States will serve as the secretariat for the working group.
President Tinubu charged the officials to work closely with their American counterparts to ensure full and effective implementation of all agreements reached during Ribadu’s visit to Washington.
The US–Nigeria Joint Working Group is mandated to drive bilateral efforts on counter-terrorism, defence cooperation and regional stability.
The renewed urgency around the partnership comes amid recent comments from US leadership.
US President Donald Trump had designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious freedom violations, warning of possible military measures if attacks on Christians persist.
Trump’s remarks intensified expectations for stronger action from the Nigerian government in addressing insecurity and protecting vulnerable communities.
