Explain to Nigerians what your administration has done with ₦15.8 trillion saved from removal of fuel subsidy, borrowings – Obi knocks Tinubu
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the funds saved from fuel subsidy removal, government borrowings and increased revenue, insisting that Nigerians deserve to know how public resources have improved their living conditions.
Obi made the demand in an open letter to the President titled “Good Day, Mr President: Nigerians Deserve Accountability,” following Tinubu’s recent visit to Akwa Ibom State.
In the letter, the former Anambra State governor congratulated Tinubu on spending a night in a state outside Lagos and Abuja, while expressing hope that the visit would encourage him to travel to other parts of the country and engage directly with Nigerians.
Obi, however, questioned how the Federal Government had utilised the ₦15.8 trillion he claimed was saved from the removal of fuel subsidy, alongside more than $100 billion in borrowings and additional revenue generated through taxation.
He also referenced the Federal Government’s reported increase in revenue collections, demanding explanations on how the additional funds had translated into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.
The former presidential candidate specifically asked the President to disclose how many Nigerians had been lifted out of poverty, the number of out-of-school children returned to classrooms and the number of functional primary healthcare centres established under his administration.
He also demanded an account of improvements in electricity supply, recalling Tinubu’s campaign promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to fix the country’s power sector.
Obi further questioned the administration’s security record, noting that Nigeria continued to feature among countries severely affected by terrorism.
According to him, Nigerians deserve clear answers on how the resources entrusted to the government have been deployed and the measurable benefits citizens have received.
He argued that public accountability, transparency and demonstrable improvements in living standards must form the foundation of the country’s development.
“The New Nigeria we want to build will be based on accountability, transparency, and the physical, measurable impact of our public resources on the lives of citizens,” Obi stated.
He concluded by reiterating his belief that a new Nigeria was possible.
