Group in IPOB attire declares end to Monday Sit-at-Home in South-East

The group claimed the decision followed a directive from Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to suspend the weekly sit-at-home action.

A group clad in Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) attire and displaying IPOB flags has announced the cancellation of the long-standing Monday sit-at-home directive across the South-East.

The announcement was made in a viral video circulated on Sunday, in which the group declared that markets, schools, businesses and workplaces should resume full operations from Monday, February 9, 2026, without fear or intimidation.

According to the group, the decision followed what it claimed was a direct instruction from IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, ordering the suspension of the weekly sit-at-home action.

The group urged residents of the South-East to return to their normal economic and social activities, assuring them that it was safe to do so.

“This decision is meant to restore normal economic, educational and social life in the region,” a speaker in the video said, calling on traders to open their shops, students to return to school and workers to resume duties.

However, the group also issued a warning to Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, cautioning him against what it described as interference in the affairs of traders and marketers in the state. The group made threats against the governor, alleging that life was being made unbearable for marketers in Anambra.

IPOB Distances Itself

Reacting to the development, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has disowned the group, denying any involvement in the announcement.

IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful, said the organisation had no knowledge of the group, describing its members as criminals allegedly recruited by Simon Ekpa to destabilise the South-East.

“We don’t know them. IPOB does not have such people. They are criminals recruited by infiltrator Simon Ekpa,” Powerful said.

He stressed that IPOB has completely dissociated itself from criminal activities in the region, including killings, abductions and destruction of property.

“Anyone involved with criminals and kidnappers under the guise of IPOB will not be accepted and will be called out. IPOB and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) are not affiliated with the criminals responsible for the chaos in our area,” he added.

The development has further deepened uncertainty around the enforcement of sit-at-home orders in the South-East, amid longstanding economic disruptions and conflicting claims by various groups.
