Tension protest erupts in Lagos over killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), a Shi’ite Muslim group, took to the streets of Lagos on Monday to protest the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in US‑Israeli strikes on Iran.

The protest occurred around the Maryland axis, with demonstrators chanting anti‑US and anti‑Israel slogans and denouncing what they described as foreign invasion and interference in sovereign nations.

According to eyewitness and news reports, the protesters demanded global condemnation of US intervention, particularly military actions they say have harmed Iran and other nations. There was heightened tension along the Maryland route as the demonstration progressed.

The Lagos State Police Command had deployed officers to key locations earlier, aiming to maintain law and order amid the heightened emotions over the Middle East conflict. However, the protest reportedly did not turn violent, and participants eventually dispersed peacefully.

This demonstration is part of a broader wave of protests by IMN members in Nigeria’s north, where similar rallies were held in cities such as Kano, Sokoto, and Niger State following the reported death of Khamenei.
