Gov Otti renovates over 100 PHCs, boosts healthcare delivery

The Abia State Government has renovated and fully equipped more than 100 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the state with modern medical tools, aimed at improving healthcare services and residents’ welfare.

The commissioning of the Eziama Ubakala Primary Health Centre in Umuahia South Local Government Area marked a milestone in the state’s health sector reforms.

Governor Alex Otti, represented by the Health Commissioner, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, revealed that the upgraded facilities now feature point-of-care auto scans, malaria and typhoid diagnostic machines, multi-parameter monitors, and automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for cardiac emergencies.

Governor Otti highlighted that at the start of his tenure, Abia ranked last in primary healthcare delivery among Nigeria’s 36 states but has since made significant improvements.

He encouraged residents to register with the Abia State Health Insurance Scheme, noting free registration for children under six and adults aged 70 and above, ensuring affordable access to quality care.

The Governor also warned against patronising unlicensed pharmacies and unqualified practitioners, stressing that his administration would uphold high health standards across the state.

Mrs. Eucharia Igwe, Health Authority Secretary for Umuahia South LGA, praised the Governor for fulfilling his promise to transform healthcare delivery, urging residents to support health workers and utilise the facilities effectively.

Community leaders, including Eze Gabriel Okenwa and Elder Chikamnaele Eluwa, lauded the project as a “new dawn,” emphasizing that the renovated PHC would save lives and enhance medical access for residents who previously faced challenges obtaining treatment.
