Abuja Teacher bags life sentence for Raping Nine-Year-Old Pupil
A 19-year-old teacher, Abdullahi Abbass, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja for raping a nine-year-old pupil in Kwali.
The judgment was delivered by Justice M. Osho-Adebiyi following a case filed by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). Abbass, who worked in one of the top schools in Kwali, was convicted without the option of a fine.
According to a statement signed by NAPTIP’s National Press Officer, Vincent Adekoye, the verdict represents a major milestone in the agency’s effort to protect children from sexual abuse under the leadership of its Director General, Binta Adamu Bello.
It also reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to enforcing the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.
The statement described the ruling as a strong motivation for both state and non-state actors involved in combating sexual and domestic violence in the country.
Court records revealed that on March 19, 2025, after school hours, Abbass sent another pupil to call the victim from home.
He then lured the boy to a nearby street, where he raped him through the anus. Despite threats from the convict, the victim reported the incident to his mother, leading to Abbass’s arrest by the police and subsequent transfer of the case to NAPTIP.
The offence, which falls under Section 2 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015, led to a two-count charge of rape and sexual abuse. Abbass was found guilty and convicted on October 29, 2025.
Reacting to the development, NAPTIP Director General, Binta Adamu Bello, commended the judiciary for its decisive ruling and the support of all partners involved in the case.
“This is a landmark judgment that carries the appropriate punishment for the offender. It will serve as a deterrent, and his name shall be included in our Sex Offenders Register,” Bello said.
