Akpabio, Uzodimma, other heavyweights battle for APC senatorial tickets as primaries hold today
The All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to conduct its senatorial primaries today, with several top-ranking political figures, serving governors and former governors battling for tickets ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among the prominent aspirants expected to participate in the exercise are Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, and Senate Chief Whip, Mohammed Tahir Monguno.
Several serving governors are also seeking APC senatorial tickets as they prepare for the end of their tenures in office.
They include Hope Uzodimma, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Dapo Abiodun, Abdullahi Sule, Mai Mala Buni, Ahmadu Fintiri and Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya.
Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is also among the notable contenders. Bello is seeking the APC ticket for Kogi Central Senatorial District, where he is expected to challenge incumbent senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the 2027 election.
In Gombe State, former governor and serving senator, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, is preparing to defend his seat against Governor Inuwa Yahaya, who is also seeking to move to the Senate.
Other former governors contesting for senatorial tickets include Jolly Nyame, Simon Lalong and Danjuma Goje.
Former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, has also declared interest in the Delta Central Senatorial seat.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that several Senate leaders and serving governors have already secured consensus nominations or emerged unopposed ahead of today’s exercise.
The APC had commenced its primary elections on Saturday with the conduct of House of Representatives primaries across the country.
To address grievances arising from the process, the party constituted appeal committees in various states.
APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, urged members of the appeal panels to carry out their duties with fairness and impartiality.
The party also directed officials deployed from Abuja to adopt indirect primaries in states where stakeholders failed to reach consensus arrangements.
