BREAKING: Military makes u-turn, admit coup plot against Tinubu, says guilty officers to face court-martial
The Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, confirmed the submission of the panel’s report.
The military high command has confirmed that some officers of the Armed Forces of Nigeria were investigated over allegations of plotting to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Reports had emerged in October last year that several officers, ranging from the rank of captain to brigadier-general, were arrested and detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) over an alleged attempt to overthrow the federal government.
On Monday, Very Nigerian reported that the investigative panel set up to probe the matter had concluded its assignment and submitted its findings to the President.
Confirming the development, the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, said the panel’s report had been forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with military regulations.
In a statement, Uba disclosed that officers found to have cases to answer would be tried before relevant military judicial panels in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to inform the general public that investigations into the matter have been concluded and the report forwarded to appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations,” the statement said.
According to him, the investigation was conducted in line with established military procedures and examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel.
“The findings have identified a number of officers whose alleged actions are inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” Uba stated.
He added that disciplinary processes would follow strictly within the framework of the law.
“Accordingly, those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations,” he said.
Uba explained that the decision to make the outcome public was in the interest of transparency and accountability, while also ensuring fairness and due process.
He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to constitutional authority, loyalty, professionalism and discipline, stressing that the measures being taken were purely internal and disciplinary.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolute in upholding the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority,” the statement added.
