Court hands ex-NEXIM Boss Robert Orya 490-year jail term over N2.4bn fraud
The Federal Capital Territory High Court has sentenced Robert Orya, a former managing director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), to a total of 490 years in prison over a N2.4 billion fraud case.
The judgement was delivered on Thursday by Justice F.E. Messiri, who found Orya guilty on all 49 counts brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The court handed down a 10-year jail term for each count, with the sentences ordered to run concurrently.
Orya was the managing director of NEXIM between 2009 and 2016. The case followed investigations by the anti-graft agency into financial transactions carried out during his time at the bank.
In November 2021, he was arraigned by the anti-graft agency on a 49-count charge bordering on fraud.
EFCC accused him of abusing his position as the managing director of the bank to obtain over N1.4 billion from the institution.
The anti-graft agency alleged that while Orya was serving as the managing director, he incorporated a company that used the names of non-existent persons and others without their consent to obtain loans for the company, which were not paid for many years.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
