Court sentence nursing mother Halima Umar to 20 years in prison for arms trafficking
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced Halima Haliru Umar to 20 years’ imprisonment after she was found guilty of unlawful possession of 302 rounds of AK-47 live ammunition and attempting to provide support for acts of terrorism.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Hauwa Yilwa following Umar’s guilty plea to two counts in a four-count charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), which arrested her in Plateau State.
Court records show that the convict pleaded guilty during her arraignment on March 11, admitting to counts three and four of the charge. The remaining counts were adjourned for further trial.
During sentencing, Justice Yilwa noted that Umar’s guilty plea amounted to an acceptance of the prosecution’s facts, as she presented no defence on the admitted counts.
The defence counsel, Hamza Dantani, appealed for leniency, describing the convict as a first-time offender and a remorseful nursing mother of a one-year-old child who was arrested alongside her. He urged the court to temper justice with mercy.
However, the prosecution counsel, Caliistus Eze, said there was no record of previous conviction against the defendant.
In her ruling, Justice Yilwa sentenced Umar to 20 years on count three and one year on count four.
The court adjourned proceedings until July 9 for the continuation of trial on counts one and two, to which the defendant pleaded not guilty.
