Flamingos sent packing as Italy hand Nigeria 4-0 defeat in Morocco
Nigeria’s Flamingos crashed out of the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after suffering a 4-0 defeat to Italy on Tuesday.
The 2022 bronze medalists went into the game hoping to continue their impressive run into the Round of 16 but were undone by the Italians’ superior finishing and tactical dominance.
Nigeria came close to taking the lead in the 24th minute when captain Shakirat Moshood’s powerful shot was pushed wide by Italy’s goalkeeper, Matilde Robbioni.
However, just before halftime, Anna Copelli broke the deadlock, dribbling past Nigeria’s defence before slotting the ball beyond goalkeeper Sylvia Echefu.
The Flamingos thought they had equalised 10 minutes into the second half when Nguemo Terlumun scored after a spirited effort by Queen Joseph, but the Video Support Review disallowed the goal, ruling that Joseph had kicked the ball from the goalkeeper’s hands.
Italy quickly capitalised, doubling their lead three minutes later through a stunning long-range effort by Caterina Venturelli.
Giulia Robino made it 3-0 five minutes later, before Rachelle Giudici sealed the rout in the 89th minute, a goal confirmed valid after another Video Support Review.
The defeat ended Nigeria’s campaign at the tournament, while Italy extended their perfect record to four wins in four matches.
