JUST-IN: Ganduje publicly recognises Sanusi as Emir of Kano
Former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on Tuesday openly recognised Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the Kano State Council of Chiefs during a public event in Kano.
Ganduje made the acknowledgement at the swearing-in ceremony of the new Deputy Governor of Kano State, Murtala Sule Garo, held at the Government House, Kano, where he greeted Sanusi using his full traditional title.
The gesture drew loud applause from dignitaries present, marking a notable public moment in the long-standing political and traditional leadership tensions surrounding the Kano emirate.
This is the first time Ganduje has publicly recognised Sanusi in that capacity since their widely reported fallout over the Kano emirship crisis.
In 2020, while serving as governor, Ganduje had deposed Sanusi as Emir of Kano, a move that triggered political and legal controversy. He subsequently installed Aminu Ado Bayero in his place.
However, following political changes in the state, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reinstated Sanusi as Emir, further deepening divisions over the traditional stool, with both Sanusi and Bayero at different times laying claim to the position.
The latest public recognition by Ganduje is being seen as a significant shift in tone in the ongoing emirship dispute that has shaped Kano’s political and traditional landscape in recent years.
