Kefas pauses APC declaration, cites national grief over kidnapped Kebbi students
Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has suspended his planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) indefinitely.
He said he could not go ahead with the political event following the kidnap of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
Kefas explained that at a time when Nigeria is dealing with another painful episode of insecurity, compassion and unity should come before politics.
He said his administration places high priority on security, education and the protection of vulnerable citizens, and it would be insensitive to proceed with any major political programme while families are in distress.
“In the light of the deeply troubling incident of the kidnapping of innocent schoolgirls in Kebbi State, I have taken the solemn decision to postpone my scheduled declaration and movement to the All Progressives Congress,” he said.
He added that the safety of children, whom he described as the most precious members of society, is more important than any political celebration.
Kefas said his thoughts are with the victims’ families, the government and people of Kebbi State, Nigerians across the country, and especially President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who he said also feels the weight of the tragedy.
“As a leader and a governor whose administration prioritizes security, education and the protection of the vulnerable, I believe it is morally right and nationally responsible to suspend all major political events until the situation receives the urgent attention it deserves,” he stated.
The governor called on security agencies to intensify rescue efforts, saying he has confidence in their capacity to bring the girls home safely.
He also urged Nigerians to stay calm, vigilant and prayerful during this difficult moment.
He added that a new date for his formal defection would be announced after proper consultations and when it is considered appropriate.
Kefas had earlier announced plans to join the APC last week and was expected to be officially received into the party on Wednesday.
