NDC records major boost as 13,000 defectors from APC, PDP, ADC join party in Ogun
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has recorded a major political boost in Ogun State following the defection of about 13,000 members and supporters from various political parties into its fold.
According to the Ogun State Chairman of the NDC, Femi Alao, the new entrants include about 3,000 registered members and 10,000 supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Addressing journalists in Abeokuta on Wednesday, Alao said the mass movement was largely influenced by the decision of Obi and Kwankwaso to join the NDC.
He noted that the defectors were drawn from the ruling All Progressives Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party, the African Democratic Congress and the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
Alao stressed that the development demonstrates the growing popularity and acceptance of the NDC across Ogun State and beyond.
“About 3,000 people and 10,000 supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso have left their former political parties such as PDP, APC, ADC and NNPP to join the NDC because of the defection of Obi and Kwankwaso to our party. They are now duly registered members of the NDC,” he said.
The chairman described the development as a “tremendous defection,” adding that more prominent politicians were already making plans to join the party.
He disclosed that a notable member of the APC and a former senator from Ogun West was expected to formally join the NDC soon.
According to him, the politician expressed interest in building a stronger political structure and creating opportunities for his supporters within the party.
Alao also dismissed suggestions that the NDC would enter into any merger arrangement ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that the party would remain independent and focused on expanding its support base.
He urged the new members to work closely with existing party structures to strengthen the NDC’s grassroots presence across the state.
The NDC chairman further criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over insecurity and economic hardship, arguing that Nigerians needed a new political direction.
He maintained that the NDC remains the most credible alternative for Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections and called on citizens to support the party’s vision for national development.
