Nigerian Govt has “Dug Deeper Hole” with Kanu’s conviction – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has expressed concern that the life imprisonment handed to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), could further inflame tensions in the South-East.

Kanu was convicted on terrorism charges, a development Obi described as troubling in light of the region’s fragile security situation.

In a post on X, Obi said the arrest, detention, and eventual conviction of Kanu reflect a failure of leadership, especially at a time when Nigerians are grappling with widespread economic difficulties and insecurity.

He argued that Kanu’s prolonged detention was unnecessary and that the government should have prioritised dialogue and inclusive governance instead of force.

According to him, “The concerns Kanu raised were not unheard of, and the issues he demanded solutions for were not insoluble,” stressing that such grievances require wisdom, empathy, and genuine engagement, qualities he said were missing from the government’s approach.

Obi warned that the handling of the case has deepened mistrust and diverted attention from urgent national issues. Although he acknowledged that “the law has taken its course”, he urged leaders to look beyond a strictly legal viewpoint.

He referenced countries where political solutions, negotiation, and amnesty have been used to support peace when legal action alone could not achieve stability.

Obi compared the government’s posture to “a man trapped in a hole who, instead of looking for a way out, keeps digging deeper”, worsening the situation for itself and the country.

He appealed to the presidency, the council of state, and respected elder statesmen to seek a reconciliatory path, saying national unity required more healing and less hostility.

“If we truly desire a new Nigeria, united, peaceful, and progressive, our leaders must choose healing over hostility, reconciliation over retaliation, and dialogue over division,” he said.
