Over 25 killed as bus plunges into River in Bangladesh (Video)

At least 26 people have been confirmed dead following a tragic bus accident in central Bangladesh after the vehicle plunged into the Padma River.

The incident occurred on Wednesday near Daulatdia in Rajbari district, about 84 kilometres from Dhaka, when the bus, reportedly carrying about 40 passengers, lost control while approaching a ferry terminal.

Emergency responders recovered 22 bodies from the submerged vehicle, including five children, 11 women and six men. Two additional women later died after being rescued, raising the death toll to 26.

Eyewitnesses said the bus was waiting to board a ferry when it suddenly fell into the river. Some passengers managed to escape, while others were trapped inside as the vehicle sank nearly nine metres underwater, complicating rescue operations.

Local residents joined emergency teams in rescue efforts, using scarves and other improvised means to pull victims from the water, while survivors struggled to swim to safety. Fire service officials, supported by divers, the army, police and coastguard, carried out extensive search operations, with fears that some passengers may still be missing.

The tragedy once again highlights persistent safety challenges in Bangladesh’s transport system, where road and waterway accidents remain common due to poor vehicle conditions, unsafe infrastructure and reckless driving.

Reports indicate that over 200 people lost their lives in various accidents during the recent Eid holidays, while a separate train and bus collision also claimed 12 lives, underscoring the growing concerns over public safety in the country.
