Policeman mishandles riffle, kill colleague, injures another in Rivers
Police authorities say investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided.
A police inspector attached to a multinational logistics company in Onne, Rivers State, has been detained after allegedly mishandling his service rifle and shooting two fellow officers, an incident that claimed one life.
The shooting occurred at about 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2026, while the officers were travelling from Life Camp to their residential quarters. The suspect, identified as Inspector Victor Okus, is attached to Hintex Logistics and operates under the supervision of the 19 Police Mobile Force (PMF).
According to a police situation report, the incident was communicated by Inspector Mathew Bawa through the Port Harcourt Mine Unit Commander, DSP Chika Njoku. The report stated that Inspector Okus was negligent in handling his firearm while inside the same vehicle with two officers attached to the 14 PMF, Yola.
The weapon reportedly discharged accidentally, hitting the two officers. They were immediately rushed to Nobsams Hospital in Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt, for urgent medical attention.
Medical personnel later confirmed that one of the victims, Inspector Ibrahim Sani, died from his injuries, while the second officer, Inspector Daniel Dauda, is currently receiving treatment.
Following the incident, Inspector Okus was disarmed, declared a police defaulter, and taken into custody at the Trans-Amadi Divisional Headquarters as investigations commenced.
Police authorities said a detailed investigation has been ordered to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, adding that further updates will be made available as the probe progresses.
