Sen. Seriake Dickson set to dump PDP, may join NDC
The senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson, has ignited fresh political calculations after announcing that he will make a “major announcement” on Thursday, a move widely interpreted as a prelude to his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party.
Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State and member of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, is scheduled to unveil his next political steps at a 2:00 pm press conference. Speculation intensified after hashtags on his X post referenced the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a newly registered political party.
The NDC, recently registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission, is being touted as Dickson’s likely destination as he positions himself to challenge the All Progressives Congress in Bayelsa State.
The development comes in the wake of Governor Douye Diri’s defection from the PDP to the APC, a move that reshaped the state’s political landscape and unsettled opposition ranks.
In a terse statement on his official X handle, Dickson wrote, “A Major Announcement is Coming!!! Tomorrow, Thursday, 5th March 2026, at 2:00 PM. I will be making an important statement at a Press Conference addressing the future of our people and our democracy. Stay tuned. Be ready. Be part of the moment. #NDC #NigeriaPolitics #2027Elections.”
Despite the suggestive tone, he did not explicitly name his next political platform. His aide, Ajiri Daniel, declined to comment, urging the public to await the press conference.
INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, had disclosed in February that out of 171 political associations that applied for registration, only the Democratic Leadership Alliance met all statutory requirements, while the NDC was registered in compliance with a Federal High Court order.
Dickson’s post triggered mixed reactions on social media. Some critics dismissed the announcement as politically insignificant, while others warned against a possible alignment with the APC. Supporters, however, praised his consistency and urged him not to abandon the opposition cause.
A factional National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ini Emomobong, declined immediate comment when contacted.
Dickson has remained one of the most vocal critics of the ruling APC in the Senate and a key opposition figure in Bayelsa politics. His influence in the oil-rich state, where he previously served as governor, has long positioned him as a rallying point for anti-APC forces.
His impending move comes weeks after he urged lawmakers to fully adopt the House version of the Electoral Amendment Bill, particularly provisions on electronic transmission of results. The push failed after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assented to the 2026 Electoral Act amendment passed by the National Assembly amid opposition protests.
With the PDP weakened in Bayelsa following Diri’s exit, Dickson’s anticipated switch to the NDC could signal a broader realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Whether it consolidates a formidable opposition bloc or deepens fragmentation within the anti-APC front will likely become clearer after his Thursday announcement.
