Government’s Objective
Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, said the initiative was created to unlock the entrepreneurial potential of young Nigerians by removing one of the biggest barriers to business growth—limited access to affordable finance.
According to him, more than 90 per cent of Nigeria’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are micro businesses owned by individuals such as tailors, ride-hailing drivers, fashion designers, mechanics, caterers, content creators and young farmers, many of whom remain excluded from formal lending because they cannot meet conventional banking requirements.
Oyedele urged beneficiaries to regard the facility as a loan rather than a grant, stressing that prompt repayment would ensure the sustainability of the programme and enable more young entrepreneurs to benefit.
Also speaking, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), Uzoma Nwagba, disclosed that the corporation had already facilitated over ₦47 billion in consumer credit to more than 301,000 Nigerians while maintaining zero non-performing loans.
He explained that YOUTHCRED for Entrepreneurs is the third phase of the government’s consumer credit programme, following earlier interventions targeted at National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and employed youths.
According to him, the government intends to expand the programme from 500,000 to one million beneficiaries before the end of the year.
Nwagba encouraged beneficiaries to repay their loans as agreed, noting that responsible borrowing would allow more young Nigerians to access affordable credit and grow their businesses.
The Federal Government said expanding access to finance for MSMEs remains a key pillar of its strategy to promote entrepreneurship, create jobs and stimulate inclusive economic growth under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
