Updated: Pupils fled after mistaking hunters for kidnappers, Nasarawa Police break silence on abduction of students at St. Peter’s Academy
The Nasarawa State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that two pupils of St Peter’s Academy in Rukubi, Doma Local Government Area, were abducted during school activities, describing the information as false and not fit to be reported as factual news.
In a statement on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, said the Command became aware of online posts claiming that kidnappers attacked the school and took away two pupils.
He stated, “The Command wishes to state unequivocally that the report is false and does not reflect the true state of affairs.”
Nansel explained that around 10 am on Friday, an unconfirmed alert was received alleging that two pupils were abducted while taking part in sporting activities on the school field. The Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, immediately deployed a team of police operatives and military personnel to the location.
According to him, “On 21/11/2025 at about 1000hrs, an unverified report filtered in alleging that two pupils of St. Peter’s Academy were abducted while engaging in sporting activities on the school field. In response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, promptly deployed a combined team of Police operatives and military personnel stationed within the general area to the scene.
“Upon arrival, it was discovered that the pupils had sighted some hunters carrying Dane guns and, out of fear, fled, mistaking them for kidnappers.”
The statement added that the area was properly searched, and normalcy was restored immediately. The school proprietor also confirmed that the alarm raised was false.
Nansel said the area is under close surveillance to prevent any security breach and urged members of the public to ignore the rumoured abduction. He also advised journalists to avoid rushing unverified stories to the public, stressing that such reports can mislead citizens.
The false alert in Nasarawa came on the same day a more serious security incident was recorded in Niger State, where armed men attacked St Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area, during a pre-dawn raid. Several students and staff were abducted in the attack.
The Niger State Government disclosed that the school had reopened recently despite earlier intelligence warnings. Security agencies, including police tactical teams and military units, have started search-and-rescue operations in the Papiri area.
