Drama as Soldiers block Wike, FCTA Officials from entering Abuja Land ( Video )
There was mild drama in Abuja on Monday when soldiers reportedly stopped the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and officials of the FCTA from gaining access to a disputed piece of land.
The incident, captured on video, showed visibly upset Wike questioning the soldiers’ authority as they blocked his convoy. One of the officials accompanying the minister could be heard telling the armed soldiers, “This is unprofessional. You cannot be threatening a minister like this.”
Wike, expressing his displeasure, accused the officers of impunity and vowed that no individual or institution would be allowed to intimidate the government.
“We cannot continue to act in impunity. We cannot continue this way. This country cannot go along this line. You cannot be higher than any government. You cannot be carrying a gun to intimidate anybody. I am not one of those that they can intimidate,” he said.
The minister alleged that the development on the land did not follow due process, insisting that the FCT Administration had no legal record of its allocation.
“You have no document,” he told the soldiers, who maintained they were acting on orders.
After a heated exchange, Wike accused the officers of acting on the directives of a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo, describing the situation as an act of intimidation.
“It’s really unfortunate. And you heard what was said by the former Chief of Staff,” Wike said.
“I don’t understand how somebody who attained that position, seeing that he has a problem, cannot approach my office to say, ‘Look, this is what’s going on,’ or simply because he is a military man, they could use that to intimidate Nigerians. I’m not one of those kinds of people who will succumb to blackmail.”
Despite Wike’s insistence, the soldiers refused to vacate the property, maintaining that they were following lawful instructions, which heightened tensions at the scene before the minister’s team eventually withdrew.
