Dickson leads closed-door peace talks to resolve Kano NDC crisis
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is actively mediating efforts to resolve internal disagreements between the Kwankwasiya movement and party officials in Kano State, while also insisting that no official results have been released from its primary elections in any part of the country.
The party disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, following a closed-door meeting between the leadership of the Kwankwasiya movement, the party’s National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and the national leadership of the NDC.
According to the statement, the meeting was convened to address rising tensions between the Kwankwasiya bloc and what it described as legacy officials of the party in Kano State.
“The closed-door meeting was aimed at resolving the issues between the Kwankwasiya movement and the legacy officials of NDC in Kano State,” the party said.
It added that both Dickson and the party leadership are currently mediating to ensure broader participation and inclusiveness among members.
“Senator Dickson and the NDC leadership are mediating in the process in order to enhance inclusion and participation by every party member,” the statement noted.
The party further reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, stressing that it would not impose candidates in Kano State or elsewhere in the federation.
“The NDC leadership will not impose candidates in Kano State, and indeed across the nation, as the party cherishes the virtues of internal democracy,” it stated.
Amid growing speculation and reports circulating on social media, the party urged members of the public to disregard any unofficial list of primary election results.
“The NDC has not released any official results of its primary elections in any state. Hence, the public and party members are urged to disregard any such list in circulation,” it warned.
The development comes amid renewed tension within the party’s Kano structure, where some officials had accused the Kwankwasiya movement of attempting to dominate the party hierarchy and sideline other stakeholders.
However, the Kwankwasiya movement has dismissed reports of internal threats or plans by its leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, to exit the party, describing such claims as unfounded.
The latest intervention by the NDC leadership is seen as part of ongoing efforts to stabilise the party and preserve unity ahead of future political contests.
