PDP crisis deepens as 2 lawyers appear in Wabara suit against INEC

Published

There was mild drama on Friday at the Federal High Court in Abuja when two lawyers appeared to represent the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in an ongoing suit filed by the Senator Adolphus Wabara-led Board of Trustees (BoT) against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The case, before Justice Salim Ibrahim, seeks a court order directing INEC to recognise the Kabiru Turaki-led interim National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP and reflect it on its official website.

Both the BoT and the PDP are jointly involved in the fresh suit, which has further highlighted internal disagreements within the party over leadership recognition and representation.

The plaintiffs sought an order directing the electoral umpire to forthwith update its records and publish on its official website the interim NWC of the party as forwarded to it by the plaintiffs and the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

They said the names of members of the Kabiru Turaki-led NWC were forwarded to the electoral umpire via their letters dated May 4.

The originating summons, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1159/2026, was filed on June 4 by a team of lawyers led by Chief Chris Uche, SAN.

Listed as plaintiffs are former Senate President Adolphus Wabara; BoT Secretary and former Governor of Niger State, Muazu Babangida Aliyu; former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana; and PDP chieftain, Olabode George, as 1st to 4th plaintiffs.

Others include former Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Maryam Ciroma; another former Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zainab Maina; BoT and NEC member, Dame Esther Uduehi; and the PDP as 5th to 8th plaintiffs respectively.

The plaintiffs sued INEC as the sole defendant in the suit.

Meanwhile, when the case was called on Friday, Chief Gordy Uche, SAN, announced his appearance for all eight plaintiffs, including the PDP, which is the 8th plaintiff.

But Mr. Sunday Ameh, SAN, also stood up shortly after Uche announced his appearance and announced his appearance for the 8th plaintiff (PDP).

The development, however, generated some confusion in court.

Tanimu Turaki, the factional national chairman of the PDP, and Prof. Jerry Gana, among others, were in court for Friday’s proceedings.

Details later.
