Argentina fight back to beat England 2-1, reach World Cup final
Argentina staged a dramatic late comeback to defeat England 2-1 and book their place in the FIFA World Cup final after a thrilling semi-final in Atlanta.
Thomas Tuchel’s side looked set to reach their first men’s World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 1966 after Anthony Gordon gave the Three Lions the lead in the 55th minute.
However, the defending champions produced a stunning late turnaround, with Enzo Fernández curling home a superb equaliser five minutes from time before Lautaro Martínez struck the winner in stoppage time to send Argentina into Sunday’s final against Spain.
England will now face France in the third-place play-off after another painful end to their World Cup campaign.
The match lived up to its billing, with both teams battling fiercely in a tense opening half that saw 19 fouls, as referee Ismail Elfath struggled to keep control.
Fernández came closest to breaking the deadlock before the interval with a long-range effort that drifted narrowly wide.
England found the breakthrough early in the second half when Morgan Rogers delivered a pinpoint cross from the right for Gordon to finish at the far post.
Argentina responded strongly, with Jordan Pickford producing an outstanding reflex save to deny Nico González before Alexis Mac Allister headed against the post.
The pressure finally paid off in the 85th minute when Fernández unleashed a stunning 25-yard strike beyond Pickford to restore parity.
England, who had packed their defence with four central defenders, struggled to withstand Argentina’s relentless attacks.
After Mac Allister struck the woodwork for a second time, Martínez completed the comeback in the 92nd minute, turning home the decisive goal to seal Argentina’s place in the final.
The victory keeps Argentina’s hopes of retaining the World Cup alive, while Spain stand between Lionel Scaloni’s side and another global title.
