2027: ‘Step aside, back Obi’ — NDC chieftain tells Atiku
The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) Director of New Media and Strategic Communications, Theo Abu Agada, has urged the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and support the NDC candidate, Peter Obi.
Agada made the call in a post on X, arguing that Atiku’s decision to step aside could strengthen the opposition’s chances of defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 election.
According to him, withdrawing from the race would not diminish Atiku’s political legacy but could instead enhance the prospects of the opposition.
The NDC chieftain acknowledged Atiku’s political credentials and described his vision for Nigeria as strong, but argued that the former vice president should now relinquish his presidential ambition in the wider interest of the opposition.
“Every electioneering season. AA is a good and solid man, but he needs to give it up at this point,” Agada wrote.
“His idea for a working Nigeria is brilliant but at this point, he needs to give up his ambition.
“If he steps aside, nothing is going to affect his sterling legacy. AA should support Obi to kick the APC out,” he added.
Agada’s comments come amid increasing efforts by opposition parties and political figures to forge alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku, who has contested the presidency several times, recently said the 2027 election would be the final presidential contest of his political career, regardless of whether he wins or loses.
The former vice president made the declaration during a Facebook Live session, setting the stage for another major presidential contest within the opposition ahead of the 2027 election.
