How Peter Obi’s convoy was attacked in Calabar – Details Emerge
The convoy of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and supporters of the party reportedly came under attack in Calabar, Cross River State, on Wednesday.
The incident occurred shortly after Obi arrived in the state capital for the party’s presidential town hall meeting scheduled to hold at Metropolitan Hotel.
According to reports, the convoy was moving through the metropolis amid cheers from supporters when suspected political thugs allegedly ambushed it around the popular Watt Market area.
The attackers reportedly hurled stones, bottles and other dangerous objects at vehicles in the convoy and party supporters, triggering panic as people scrambled for safety.
The incident also disrupted vehicular movement and commercial activities in the area.
Several NDC supporters reportedly sustained injuries, while some vehicles and other valuables were damaged. Windscreens of some vehicles in the convoy were also said to have been shattered.
However, operatives of the Cross River State Police Command reportedly intervened, dispersed the attackers and restored order in the area.
The police also arrested a 27-year-old suspect in connection with the incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the arrest in a statement made available to journalists in Calabar.
He identified the suspect as Victor Edet Yellow-Duke and said investigations had commenced to identify others involved in the attack, including their alleged sponsors.
“NDC supporters under heavy attack in Watt Market. The police have made an arrest to this effect. The suspect name is Victor Edet Yellow Duke, male, 27 years,” the police spokesman said.
Eitokpah assured residents that normalcy had been restored, adding that security had been strengthened at strategic locations across the metropolis to prevent a recurrence.
Despite the incident, Obi later proceeded to the venue of the town hall meeting, where he was expected to address party supporters and other stakeholders in Cross River State.
