GWAGWALADA, FCT — As climate projections warn of severe heatwaves linked to a impending super-El Niño event, threatening over 30,000 additional deaths globally between now and 2027, the Gwagwalada Area Council has initiated proactive measures to safeguard local residents from extreme temperatures and public health risks.

Speaking during an interview, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Council Chairman, Honorable Comrade Mohammed Isah Hassan, outlined the local government’s multi-sectoral strategy to build heat resilience across the Area Council’s wards.

A central pillar of the council’s response is addressing acute water scarcity during peak heat periods. The administration has conducted community needs assessments to pinpoint vulnerable localities across all wards, moving to install motorized boreholes and overhead water supply tanks in hard-hit zones including Ibwa, Paiko-Kore, and Paikon Kore axis, as well as installing elevated storage units at locations like Gurfata.

”We have located sites within every ward where boreholes will be drilled. In rural communities, access to reliable water points is essential during severe heat,” the media aide stated.

Recognizing that extreme heat elevates the risk of secondary disease outbreaks, the Area Council is deploying a joint outreach task force combining the Department of Media and the Department of Health. The initiative will conduct targeted sensitization campaigns across public markets and schools to educate residents on heat stress management, proper hydration, and sanitation practices.

”We have so many communicable diseases linked to extreme heat conditions,” the official noted. “It is vital that residents take regular baths and maintain hygienic living environments so that, while working to curtail heat casualties, we also prevent secondary disease outbreaks.”

Additionally, the Department of Agriculture has submitted a targeted tree-planting campaign designed to expand urban canopy cover and provide natural shade in exposed residential areas.

As extreme weather patterns continue to disproportionately impact peri-urban communities across the Federal Capital Territory, local authorities emphasize that public cooperation through environmental hygiene, shade utilization, and reliance on designated clean water points will remain critical to mitigating heat risks over the coming seasons.
