BREAKING: Massive crowd storm Jonathan’s residence, beg ex-President to contest 2027 election, ‘I will consult widely’, he responded
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has responded to renewed calls from youth groups urging him to return to the presidential race in 2027, saying he has heard their appeals but will consult widely before making any political decision.
Jonathan made the remarks on Thursday in Abuja when he received youth delegations who visited his office to press for his return to active frontline politics ahead of the next general election.
“I’ve heard you loud and clear. I will consult widely before taking any decision,” he said, stopping short of confirming whether he would contest.
The former president used the opportunity to urge Nigerian youths to deepen their involvement in democratic processes, particularly in ensuring peaceful, credible and transparent elections across the country.
He expressed concern over declining voter turnout, describing voter apathy as a major challenge facing Nigeria’s democracy.
“Nigeria has one of the highest levels of voter apathy in all the elections I have observed globally,” Jonathan said.
He called on young Nigerians to move beyond political discussions and become more actively engaged in civic participation and electoral processes, stressing that democracy can only thrive when citizens actively shape outcomes at the ballot box.
Jonathan, who led Nigeria between 2010 and 2015, remains a recurring figure in political conversations ahead of 2027, with speculation often surrounding his potential involvement in coalition or comeback arrangements.
