BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu moved to Sokoto Correctional Centre after sentencing
The Department of State Services has moved the convicted leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to the Nigerian Custodial Centre in Sokoto following his conviction and sentencing for terrorism.
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja had on Thursday ruled that the DSS could transfer Kanu to any correctional facility in the country while delivering judgment on the case.
On Friday, Kanu’s legal consultant, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the development, stating that Kanu had been moved out of the DSS facility in Abuja.
He wrote, “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has just been moved from DSS Abuja to the correctional facility (prison) in Sokoto; so far away from his lawyers, family, loved ones and well-wishers.”
A source also confirmed the relocation to Journalist, saying, “It’s true. That’s all I can say for now but please don’t quote me.”
Kanu’s consultants also confirmed the move in a short clip obtained by Very Nigerian.
Justice Omotosho had earlier convicted Kanu on a seven-count charge of terrorism and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The judge agreed with allegations made by the DSS that Kanu used acts of terrorism in his agitation for the secession of the South-East, South-South, and parts of Benue and Kogi from Nigeria.
After the conviction, prosecution counsel Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) urged the court to impose the maximum death penalty provided in three of the charges, stating that the law did not give room for discretion on them.
He also asked the court to order the closure of Kanu’s digital media devices and accounts.
Awomolo further requested that the court direct authorities to keep Kanu in the safest correctional facility in the country until the execution of the sentence, saying such a measure was necessary to prevent distractions or possible attempts on his life from both supporters and enemies.
