Edible oil tanker drivers call off strike following FG, DSS intervention

The National Union of Edible Oil Tanker Drivers of Nigeria (NUEOTDN) has suspended its planned strike following interventions by the Federal Government and the Department of State Services (DSS).

The union’s President, Ilias Aperun, announced the suspension in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos.

NUEOTDN had announced on Monday that it would begin industrial action on September 22 over alleged interference in its operations by the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).

The union did not disclose further details of the discussions that led to the suspension but said the decision followed interventions by the government and the DSS.

In an update, Aperun said the interventions were aimed at finding a lasting solution to issues affecting the public health and safety of its members and protecting the interests of stakeholders in the edible oil industry.

The president said discussions and efforts to resolve the issues were ongoing.

He said the union decided to suspend the action in the interest of peace, national economic stability and the protection of the edible oil supply chain.

Aperun directed all members and stakeholders to suspend any planned industrial action and maintain peace and normal operations pending further communication from the union.

“NUEOTDN remains committed to the protection of public health, welfare and legitimate interests of its comrades, while also supporting a peaceful and sustainable resolution of the issues at stake,” he said.

The president said further updates would be communicated to the public as developments arose.
