Egypt beat Nigeria 2–1 in pre-AFCON friendly
Egypt picked up a morale-boosting 2–1 victory over Nigeria in an international friendly played in Cairo on Tuesday, with Mostafa Mohamed scoring the decisive goal in the second half.
The home side took the lead shortly before the half-hour mark as Mahmoud Saber finished from close range at the back post, following a well-timed assist from Zizo, who troubled Nigeria’s defence repeatedly down the right wing.
Nigeria found it difficult to settle into an attacking flow but came close to equalising before the break when Paul Onuachu’s long delivery nearly resulted in an own goal from Yasser Ibrahim, forcing goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy to react quickly and push the ball away.
The equaliser came shortly after. Zaidu Sanusi’s free kick from the left was fumbled by El Shenawy at his near post, allowing defender Chidozie Awaziem to react quickest and head in from close range.
Egypt regained control after the break and restored their lead through Mostafa Mohamed, who finished clinically from inside the area following another incisive move involving Zizo.
Nigeria were unable to find a response as Egypt saw out the match comfortably to cap an encouraging final tune-up ahead of the tournament.
Egypt open their AFCON campaign against Zimbabwe on Monday, while Nigeria face Tanzania a day later.
