If Wale Edun could be given this treatment, then nobody around Tinubu is safe — ex-Minister Dalung
Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, has said the exit of former Finance Minister Wale Edun from the cabinet may point to deeper cracks within President Bola Tinubu’s inner circle.
Speaking in an interview, Dalung argued that Edun, described as a long-time ally and one of the architects of Tinubu’s Lagos economic reforms, would not have left under ordinary circumstances without significant underlying issues.
He noted that while official explanations attributed the development to health reasons, the political context suggests otherwise.
“I agree with them that he resigned on health grounds because that is their media statement, but what we know is more than what they are trying to tell Nigerians,” Dalung said.
According to him, Edun’s long-standing relationship with President Bola Tinubu makes the development more significant than a routine cabinet exit.
“Nobody is as close as Wale Edun to Bola Tinubu… If it could be handled in this manner, then nobody around Tinubu is safe,” he warned.
Dalung further said he had previously believed Edun was not ideally suited for the political environment he served in, describing him as a man of integrity who may have struggled with systemic contradictions.
“He tolerated it to the extent that his integrity was going to break, and he had to throw in the towel,” he added.
Turning to opposition politics ahead of 2027, Dalung described a possible collaboration between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso as “a fantastic idea,” though he stressed that he would not openly endorse any aspirant due to internal party rules within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He insisted that the ADC must maintain transparency and avoid the internal conflicts that weakened other parties in the past, adding that the party’s focus should remain on fairness and providing a better political alternative for younger Nigerians.
