Makarfi resigns as PDP BoT Secretary, cites zoning principle after Turaki’s emergence
Ahmed Makarfi, former governor of Kaduna State, has resigned as secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), saying the party must strictly uphold its zoning principle.
His resignation comes days after the PDP elected Kabiru Turaki, former minister of special duties and intergovernmental affairs, as national chairman at its national convention on Saturday. Both Makarfi and Turaki are from the north-west.
In a letter addressed to Adolphus Wabara, chairman of the PDP BoT, Makarfi said he could no longer remain in the position following Turaki’s emergence.
He disclosed that he had attempted to resign two months earlier but was persuaded to stay until after the convention.
“You may recall that about two months ago, I had resigned as secretary of the board and posted the same on the board’s WhatsApp platform,” Makarfi wrote.
“Mr Chairman, you may recall that you personally urged me to stay on until after a convention that produced a chairman.”
He said his position had not changed, stressing that the chairman of the party and the BoT secretary should not come from the same geopolitical zone.
“The principal reason for my resignation then and now was, and is still, my belief that the national chairman of the party and the secretary should not come from the same geopolitical zone,” he stated.
“Now that a chairman has emerged from the north-west, where I come from, it is necessary to give him full space to do the needful.”
Makarfi added that his resignation was necessary to avoid any impression of imbalance within the leadership structure of the party.
He formally announced that his resignation takes effect immediately from November 17, 2025.
The former governor of Kaduna, who served from 1999 to 2007, thanked Wabara and all BoT members for their support and the cordial relationship during his time as secretary.
