NDC set to inaugurate PCC, gives Obi, Kwankwaso nomination powers

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to inaugurate its Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) after concluding consultations with stakeholders across the country.

The party said its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had held meetings with the party’s national leader and other members of the leadership on the composition of the campaign council.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, Esq., the NDC said Obi and Kwankwaso had been given the authority to nominate key officials of the campaign council in consultation with the party.

The positions include Director-General, Deputy Director-General (North), Spokesman, Deputy Spokesperson, Head of New Media, Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director.

The statement said the arrangement was designed to promote inclusiveness and cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“In this regard, our Presidential Candidate and his Vice-Presidential Candidate have held several productive meetings with the National Leader and the leadership of the party. To ensure inclusiveness, cohesion, and victory, the party at the national level has agreed as follows,” the statement said.

The party added that Obi and Kwankwaso had been given a free hand to make the nominations.

“Our Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi and his running mate, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, shall nominate the Director-General of the Campaign, Deputy Director-General (North), the Spokesman of the Campaign, Deputy Spokesperson, Head of New Media, the Finance Director, Deputy Finance Director and several others in consultation with the party,” it said.

According to the NDC, the Finance Director and deputy will work with the party’s National Treasurer to manage campaign funds, with the party expected to account for the funds in line with the Electoral Act.

“The Finance Director and his Deputy, in collaboration with the National Treasurer of the party, shall manage all campaign funds in the spirit of transparency and accountability, as the party is saddled with the responsibility of rendering accounts to INEC in line with the Electoral Act,” the statement said.

The party said a full organogram for the campaign structure had been prepared since August and made available to Obi and Kwankwaso for their input.

It added that nominations had also been received from stakeholders across the country.

“A full organogram of the campaign structure has been developed since August and made available to both Mr. Peter Obi and Dr. Kwankwaso for their input, while we also got nominations from other stakeholders across the country,” the statement said.

The NDC said it would announce and inaugurate the Presidential Campaign Council after receiving the candidates’ inputs.

The party also said it had proposed a campaign timetable since August and was working to conclude arrangements for funding and fundraising, which it said would be spearheaded by the presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

According to the party, funds raised would be paid into the presidential campaign account and managed by officers nominated by Obi and Kwankwaso alongside the National Treasurer.

The inauguration of the PCC had initially been scheduled for the first week of September but was postponed due to Obi’s travel schedule, according to the statement.

The party also appealed to its candidates at all levels to discourage internal disputes among their supporters and support groups.

“There are no battles to fight within the NDC. The common opponent to defeat is the ruling APC. We are committed as a party. The party has done its own and is ready to do more,” the statement said.

The party urged its candidates and supporters to focus on the elections, saying its candidates were contesting under the NDC and not as independent candidates.

“The NDC wants all our candidates at all levels to win resoundingly, especially as they are not running as independent candidates,” it added.

NDC Begins Party Agent Selection

The party leadership also directed its state and Local Government Area chairmen to begin consultations with candidates and other stakeholders over the selection and harmonisation of party agents for the forthcoming general elections.

According to the directive, each state and LGA leadership is expected to generate a comprehensive list of two categories of agents: one for National Assembly elections and another for governorship and State Assembly elections.

The proposed agents will subsequently be scrutinised and ratified by the party leadership, including Obi and Kwankwaso, before training begins.

The NDC directed that the exercise be concluded and the final lists submitted within two weeks of the directive.

The committee responsible for appointing the party agents is chaired by the Deputy National Chairman (South), Comrade Babatunde Alli, while Vin Martin Ilo serves as secretary. Dr Yunusa Tanko, Nafiu Dankura and the National Vice Chairmen representing the six geopolitical zones are also members of the committee.

The latest directive forms part of the party’s preparations for the 2027 general elections as it works to finalise its campaign structure and election-day organisation.
