Police in New Orleans, United States, have arrested 27-year-old Nigerian, Chukwuebuka Eweni, over a stabbing attack that left his father dead and his two sisters injured.

Family members told WWL Louisiana, a local paper, that Eweni had been battling an undisclosed mental illness for a long time but had never shown violent behaviour until last Tuesday.

They said the evening started like any other until Eweni suddenly picked up a knife and stabbed his father, Samuel, and his two sisters.

Relatives said they still do not know what triggered the attack.

Samuel, who was a professor of computer sciences at Southern University, New Orleans, was confirmed dead at the scene.

Joseph Bouie, the university chancellor, described Samuel as “a mentor and a guiding light” to many students.

One of Eweni’s sisters has been discharged from the hospital, while the other was still receiving treatment as of last Wednesday.

Doctors expect her to survive.

After the stabbing, relatives said they later discovered that Eweni went to New Orleans East Hospital, a place he normally visited for mental support, to seek help.

The hospital, unaware of the incident, reportedly transferred him to another facility in Jefferson Parish.

Police later traced him to that second facility and arrested him the next morning after obtaining an arrest warrant.

According to a police statement, Eweni is wanted on one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. Authorities also said he is currently being evaluated at a medical facility.
