ADC Chieftain calls on Makinde, Bala Mohammed, others to quit PDP

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged top opposition leaders, including Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join its ranks ahead of upcoming ward congresses.

Usman Okai, a chieftain of the ADC, made the call in a statement on Monday in Abuja, also appealing to members of the PDP Governors’ Forum and the Kabiru Turaki-led faction within the party to consider aligning with the ADC.

The appeal comes as the PDP continues to face internal crisis following its national convention in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, 2025.

The event has sparked several legal battles, and on Monday, the Court of Appeal upheld an earlier ruling preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognising the convention’s outcome, leaving the party in continued leadership uncertainty.

According to Okai, the call became necessary in view of the ongoing legal disputes surrounding the PDP’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Okai said, “The Court of Appeal’s affirmation of the injunction against the Ibadan convention signals the likely direction of the Supreme Court.

“There is a high probability that all primaries will be concluded before the Supreme Court delivers a final determination. If the convention is eventually nullified, every candidate produced under that structure will be automatically disqualified. Staying in the PDP is a risk no serious politician should take.”

The ADC chieftain described the current situation within the PDP as a major political challenge for members of the party with ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He said the ADC was well-positioned to accommodate politicians seeking a new political platform amid the uncertainties within the opposition party.

“There is a high probability that all primaries will be concluded before the Supreme Court delivers a final determination. If the convention is eventually nullified, every candidate produced under that structure will be automatically disqualified.

“Staying in the PDP is a risk no serious politician should take. I therefore call on Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi and others to join the ADC,” he said.

Okai also urged supporters at the grassroots to take advantage of the upcoming direct primaries by registering with the ADC and strengthening the party’s structure across the country.

“We are inviting all progressives to embrace the ADC ahead of the ward congresses. This is the only way to build a viable alternative. If we are to rescue the country, we must register now and move as a united front,” he added.
