Five key things to know about Dr. Kingsley Udeh (SAN), Nigeria’s New Minister of Science and Technology
Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh (SAN), who hails from Enugu State, has emerged as one of the most distinguished figures in Nigeria’s legal and governance circles.
Recently appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the new Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology, Dr. Udeh brings a blend of legal scholarship, administrative expertise, and reform-minded leadership to the federal cabinet.
Here are five key facts to know about the new minister:
1. He is an accomplished legal scholar and consultant
Dr. Udeh holds a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) in Public Law from Stellenbosch University, South Africa, where he specialized in public procurement law.
He also earned an LL.M. with distinction from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom.
Beyond academia, he has served as a consultant to international organizations, including UNICEF and the UK’s DFID, providing expertise in public procurement and financial management.
2. He led Enugu State’s justice sector reforms
Before his ministerial appointment, Dr. Udeh served as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Enugu State under Governor Peter Mbah.
In less than two years, he transformed the justice system, drafting over 18 legislative bills, 15 of which were passed into law.
His tenure also saw the revival of Citizens’ Rights and Mediation Centers across all 17 local governments, promoting access to justice at the grassroots level.
3. He is one of Nigeria’s newest Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN)
In July 2025, Dr. Udeh was elevated to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), a recognition reserved for exceptional lawyers who have made outstanding contributions to the legal profession.
This achievement further cemented his standing as a respected figure in Nigeria’s legal community.
4. He has a rich academic and international background
Dr. Udeh has lectured at Baze University, Abuja, and the Nigerian Law School, mentoring a generation of legal professionals.
He is also an active member of the African Procurement Law Unit at Stellenbosch University and serves on the editorial board of the African Public Procurement Law Journal, where he contributes to advancing legal research across Africa.
5. He brings reform-driven leadership to the federal cabinet
Known for his strategic and pragmatic leadership style, Dr. Udeh is widely praised for combining scholarship with actionable governance.
His appointment as Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s efforts toward technological advancement, innovation policy, and institutional reform at the national level.
