Kano NDC crisis deepens as party leaders accuse Kwankwaso of hijacking structure
A fresh crisis has engulfed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following allegations by senior party officials that former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, attempted to take full control of the party’s structure in Kano State and exclude non-Kwankwasiyya members from its nomination process.
In a joint statement signed by the NDC North-West Vice Chairman, Mohammed Rabiu Serina, and the Kano State Chairman, Hussaini Isa Mariga, the officials alleged that repeated interventions by the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, and the National Working Committee failed to resolve the growing internal rift.
According to the statement, the crisis began after Kwankwaso joined the party and moved to consolidate control over its Kano structure, a move they said was resisted by founding members who helped build the platform before his arrival.
The officials claimed that a 60/40 power-sharing arrangement was later brokered, allocating 60 per cent of party structure and influence in Kano to Kwankwaso’s camp, while 40 per cent was reserved for the original leadership.
However, they alleged that Kwankwaso later refused to implement the agreement during the nomination process, effectively shutting out party members outside the Kwankwasiyya movement from contesting elective positions.
They further alleged that all nomination forms for key positions, including the State House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate and governorship tickets in Kano, were exclusively controlled by Kwankwaso’s loyalists.
The party leaders said repeated efforts to reach compromise—including proposals to allocate some legislative tickets to non-Kwankwasiyya members—were rejected.
They also claimed that both Dickson and the National Working Committee made separate interventions to resolve the dispute but were unable to secure compliance from Kwankwaso’s camp.
The development has raised tensions within the party, with concerns that the internal struggle could weaken its cohesion ahead of the next general election cycle.
Party stakeholders are now calling for urgent intervention to prevent a further breakdown of unity within the Kano NDC structure.
