Man Utd edge Forest as Fernandes matches EPL assist record
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes matched a long-standing Premier League record of 20 assists in a single season as his side secured a narrow 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford, a result that confirmed United’s third-place finish.
Fernandes, who has enjoyed one of the finest creative campaigns in English football, joined Premier League legends Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne on the all-time single-season assist tally when his cross was converted by Bryan Mbeumo for United’s third goal of the night.
The match itself delivered an open and entertaining contest, with both sides already having achieved their key objectives for the season—United securing a return to the Champions League and Forest sealing their Premier League survival.
United struck first through Luke Shaw, who volleyed home after just five minutes, setting the tone for a fast-paced encounter filled with chances at both ends.
Forest responded early in the second half when Morato rose at the back post to head in Elliot Anderson’s precise delivery, bringing the visitors level.
Controversy followed soon after when Matheus Cunha restored United’s lead, finishing from close range after a move involving Bryan Mbeumo, whose earlier handball in the buildup was reviewed by VAR but ultimately not penalised, sparking debate among observers.
Morgan Gibbs-White nearly equalised immediately, but was denied by a sharp save from Senne Lammens, who rushed off his line to intervene.
Fernandes’ record-equalling moment arrived 14 minutes from time when Mbeumo finished off a drilled cross, registering his first goal since February and sealing what proved to be the decisive strike.
Forest, however, continued to fight back, with Elliot Anderson and Gibbs-White combining again to reduce the deficit late on, but United held firm to secure all three points in a dramatic finish.
The result caps off a strong end to the season for United, with Fernandes once again at the heart of their attacking success, reinforcing his status as one of the Premier League’s most consistent playmakers.
