Peter Obi declares 2027 Presidential Campaign open, says ‘Nigeria Must Work’
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has formally declared the commencement of his campaign for the 2027 presidential election.
Obi made the announcement during a press briefing on Friday morning, outlining his intention to focus the campaign on the major challenges confronting Nigerians rather than ethnic or religious considerations.
The former Anambra State governor said his decision to contest the presidency was driven by a desire to contribute to solving the country’s economic, social and developmental challenges.
According to Obi, Nigeria can overcome its current difficulties if the right policies and decisions are implemented.
“I consider myself to be among those contesting to address the challenges Nigeria is currently facing,” Obi said.
He said his campaign would be guided by a central conviction: “Nigeria must work.”
Obi also challenged all presidential candidates to subject their records, credentials and policy proposals to public scrutiny ahead of the election.
“Every candidate must be willing to defend their credentials, defend their records, and subject their vision to open scrutiny,” he said.
He added that candidates should not hide behind the structures of government or rely on proxies and surrogates to speak on their behalf.
“No candidate should hide behind the high walls of power, send proxies or surrogates to do their bidding, and expect Nigerians to entrust them with the leadership of their country,” Obi stated.
The declaration marks the beginning of Obi’s campaign activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with the NDC expected to take its message of economic development, accountability and improved governance to voters across the country.
