Xenophobia: FG considers tough measures against MTN, Multi choice, other South African firms operating in Nigeria

The Federal Government has warned that it may consider measures against South African companies operating in Nigeria, including telecom giant MTN, as tensions rise over the continued harassment of Nigerians living in South Africa.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, made the position known on Thursday while addressing concerns over renewed anti-migrant attacks and ongoing evacuation efforts for affected Nigerians.

She said Nigeria has so far exercised restraint, relying on diplomatic engagement, but stressed that the government may be left with no choice but to review its options if the situation persists.

According to her, more than 120 South African companies currently operate in Nigeria, enjoying a level of freedom that contrasts sharply with the treatment of Nigerians abroad.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu specifically mentioned major South African brands such as MTN, MultiChoice, Stanbic and Protea, noting that any response by Nigeria would still follow constitutional and legislative procedures.

While acknowledging the sensitivity of the matter, she emphasised that continued attacks on Nigerians in South Africa were becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

The development comes amid growing calls within Nigeria’s political space for stronger diplomatic and economic responses to protect citizens abroad.
