Yelwata Killings: Pathologists exhume 105 bodies in forensic probe
Federal medical pathologists have reportedly exhumed 105 bodies from mass graves in Yelwata community, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, as part of investigations into the June 13, 2025 attack that left dozens dead and many residents displaced.
The exercise is aimed at supporting ongoing forensic investigations and strengthening evidence in the prosecution of suspects linked to the killings.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the forensic team was led by Saad Ahmed from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and arrived in Yelwata on February 23 alongside operatives of the Intelligence Response Team from Abuja.
Sources quoted by the publication said the delegation worked in collaboration with officials of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency during the operation.
The exhumation exercise reportedly began on February 24 after the grave locations were identified under tight security provided by the Benue State Police Command. Seven bodies were initially recovered on the first day.
The team continued work on February 25 and 26, exhuming additional remains and bringing the total number of bodies recovered to 105 from 13 mass graves discovered in and around Yelwata community.
The exercise was concluded on February 26, with officials indicating that further updates would be communicated as investigations progress.
Nine suspects have already been arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja over their alleged involvement in the attack, as authorities intensify efforts to secure justice for victims.
