Okpebholo unveils special courts, threatens public hanging for convicted kidnappers in Edo
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has vowed to take a hard stance against kidnapping and cult-related crimes, warning that anyone convicted of kidnapping in the state could face public execution.
The governor made the declaration on Thursday while unveiling plans to establish special courts dedicated to the speedy trial of kidnapping and cultism cases across Edo State.
According to Okpebholo, the proposed courts will be mandated to conclude trials and deliver judgments within two to three weeks in a bid to strengthen the fight against violent crime.
“Now we are going to set up a special court to try suspected kidnappers and cultists. Within two to three weeks, we are done with it, and I will sign it,” the governor stated.
He further declared that convicted kidnappers would not only face execution but would also be publicly displayed for residents to witness the consequences of their actions.
“The execution — hang him. I will take you to the roundabout so that the whole of Edo people will see you, and on this I will have no regrets,” Okpebholo said.
The governor used the occasion to issue a strong warning to criminals operating within the state, insisting that his administration would not tolerate acts of kidnapping, cultism or any other form of violent crime.
“My message to them is simple: whoever has such a mind to kidnap should know that you cannot do it and go free. There is no crime that will be committed in Edo State that such a person will not be arrested,” he said.
Okpebholo also warned individuals providing support or protection to criminal elements to desist immediately, stressing that security agencies in the state are working around the clock to ensure the safety of residents.
“Whoever is supporting you or aiding you to do it should stop because we are ready for you. We are not joking. We are not sleeping. Day and night, security agencies are working to make sure that this land is safe,” he added.
The governor’s remarks come amid growing concerns over incidents of kidnapping and cult-related violence in parts of Edo State, with the government promising stronger measures to restore security and public confidence.
