“Who Is Afraid of Primaries?” — Aisha Yesufu break silence amid NDC ticket controversy
Human rights activist and close ally of Peter Obi, Aisha Yesufu, has declared that elections are won through grassroots engagement and not through “social media propaganda” or smear campaigns, amid controversy surrounding the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial ticket in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Yesufu made the remarks in a strongly-worded statement while responding to criticism trailing reports that she lost the NDC senatorial ticket to Mrs Pam, a recent entrant into the party.
In the statement titled “Who Is Afraid of Primaries?”, Yesufu urged members of the NDC in the FCT to remain committed to strengthening the party and supporting credible candidates through democratic processes.
“Election is not won by social media propaganda nor by orchestrated smear campaign. Election is won by engaging electorate one wishes to serve respectfully and with empathy and compassion,” she stated.
Addressing party supporters directly, the activist said the era of making political choices out of fear was over, insisting that courage and belief in democratic principles should guide the party’s internal processes.
“The time of voting or making choices out of fear is gone. This time we will make our choices out of courage and belief in the mantra: POWER BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE!” she said.
Yesufu also called on her supporters across the six area councils and 62 wards of the FCT to remain steadfast and continue mobilising at the grassroots level ahead of the party primaries.
“To my teeming supporters across the FCT do not be deterred, continue your ground work across the 62 wards. We are ready to meet them on the primaries ground!”
Repeating her challenge to opponents within the party, she added:
“WHO IS AFRAID OF PRIMARIES?”
The development comes amid growing tension within the NDC over ticket allocations and the influx of new political entrants into the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Yesufu has remained one of the prominent supporters of Peter Obi and a vocal advocate for political reforms, youth participation and internal democracy within opposition politics.
